Reiki for Everyone

A Powerful Conversation on Inclusivity with Alexandra

Last week the UK Reiki Federation community gathered online for another inspiring session in our growing programme of professional development and community events. This time we were joined by Alexandra, who delivered a deeply thoughtful and engaging exploration of inclusivity within Reiki practice.

The session invited practitioners to reflect on an important question: what does it truly mean for Reiki to be inclusive?

From the very beginning, Alexandra encouraged participants to consider how experiences of exclusion, misunderstanding, or misinformation can sometimes prevent people from exploring Reiki. These barriers might arise from cultural background, religious beliefs, disability, financial circumstances, or simply misconceptions about what Reiki is and who it is for. Through thoughtful discussion, the session highlighted how practitioners can become more aware of these challenges and play a role in making Reiki accessible to everyone.

Returning to the Roots of Reiki

A powerful theme running through the session was a return to the original vision of Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. Alexandra reminded attendees that Reiki was never intended to be exclusive or restricted. In fact, Usui’s vision was quite radical for its time, opening the practice to anyone for the benefit of society as a whole.

Reiki, she explained, was designed as a simple, adaptable system of techniques that could support wellbeing across physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Its simplicity is precisely what makes it accessible. It does not require belief in any doctrine, nor does it belong to any single culture or religion. It is, at its heart, a universal practice intended for the collective good.

Understanding Barriers and Meeting People Where They Are

One of the most impactful parts of the session explored how practitioners can create truly inclusive environments.

Participants discussed the many ways Reiki can be adapted to meet individual needs, whether that means adjusting treatment positions, offering distance sessions, simplifying explanations, or ensuring clear consent and communication. Alexandra also spoke about practical considerations such as accessibility, sensory sensitivities, and financial barriers, reminding practitioners that small adjustments can make a profound difference.

At its core, the message was simple but powerful: inclusive practice begins with listening and understanding.

A Personal Perspective

In a particularly moving moment, Alexandra shared her own experience living with dysautonomia, a condition affecting the autonomic nervous system. She described how Reiki has played a meaningful role in supporting her wellbeing and even shared measurable changes in heart rate during Reiki sessions.

Her openness and willingness to share personal experience added an authentic and human dimension to the discussion, prompting reflection among participants and reinforcing the importance of vulnerability and empathy within the Reiki community.

Learning, Reflecting, Growing

As with many of the UK Reiki Federation events, the session concluded with open discussion and reflection. Attendees shared their appreciation for the thoughtful presentation and the opportunity to explore inclusivity in such depth.

The conversation reinforced an important idea: Reiki practice is not static. It evolves as practitioners continue learning, reflecting, and deepening their understanding of the people they serve.
Events like this help strengthen the professional community, encouraging practitioners to share experiences, ask questions, and continue growing together.

Missed the Session?

If you weren’t able to join us live, we strongly recommend watching the recording. Alexandra’s insights offer valuable perspective for both experienced practitioners and those earlier in their Reiki journey.
And the good news is that this is just the beginning. With a full calendar of upcoming events and guest speakers, there are plenty more opportunities to learn, connect, and deepen your practice with the UK Reiki Federation community.
