10K Run to Raise Funds for Animal Reiki Research Project

I am the UK Reiki Federation Animal Reiki Coordinator and I am passionate about raising awareness and support for the benefits that Reiki can offer to animals, also driving training standards and the professional recognition of Animal Reiki Practitioners. Based in Yorkshire, my many interests include my love of animals and my holistic animal good cause organisation. However, I have a life outside my coordinator role too.

In April, just 5 month ago, after running just 200m I realised how terribly unfit I was. This promoted a decision to change my life and to start jogging. I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed the first jog with my rescue dog around the beauty of a nearly park. Within a few weeks I attempted a 5k fun run and learned about free 5k Parkruns every Saturday morning in parks all over the UK and internationally. A running magazine I was offered by a friend, an outdoor fitness magazine in a waiting room and a lady I just happened to chat with in a local swimming pool, on my 1st swim in 12 years, resulted in me being encouraged to join a running club. I hadn’t realised that running clubs catered for all standards from couch to 5k, up to seasoned marathon runners. After 4 months I signed up to try a 10k run, and finished it, puffed, but I did it and ahead of my predicted time. I loved it! Yet 4 months earlier I would never have believed I could ever run as far as 10k.

It seemed natural to combine my interest and passion for Reiki with my new love of running so I signed up to run the Sheffield City 10k. But this time, it was to be a sponsored run for the UK Reiki Federation, with all funds raised going towards setting up an Animal Reiki Research project

We are not aware of anyone having compiled studies measuring the effects of Reiki on animals and science backing is vital if Reiki is ever to be accepted by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and hence the majority of the vets. Vets were advised by RCVS late 2017 that they are not expected to carry out complementary therapies that are not backed by scientific evidence. This includes Reiki, and has far reaching implications. Gaining sufficient robust evidence will be a long-term project but through funds raised from this activity I hope at least to get the ball rolling.

On the human Reiki front, Reiki is becoming more widely accepted. Much research has shown positive results, the wonderful initiative at St Georges hospital in London is producing fantastic outcomes, Reiki is expected to be part of social prescribing when this is fully operational, occasional hospitals are offering paid Reiki Practitioner posts, and Reiki Practitioners trained at NOS level who are on the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council’s (CNHS’s) accredited Register of complementary therapy practitioners can receive GP referrals. I would like to see an equivalent for Animal Reiki and recognised Animal Reiki Practitioners one day.

If you feel passionate about the wider acceptance and support of Reiki to benefit animals in the future, I’d be very grateful if you would support my Sheffield City 10K run for UKRF at Rother Valley Country Park on October 13th. If anyone wishes to join me or come along to watch that would be great too!

Many thanks

Sue
