Press Release

April 2003

Reiki Awareness Week
12 – 18 May 2003

STOP PRESS: The UK Reiki Federation has initiated, in conjunction with the Foundation for Integrated Health, the first meeting of Reiki organisations, where all agreed to work towards Voluntary Self Regulation and a single Register of Reiki Practitioners and Teachers.

Why a Reiki Awareness Week?

  • To promote to the public this original form of healing, which is unlike any other therapy in the west.
  • To reassure the public that members of the UK Reiki Federation (UKRF) are committed to maintaining high standards and to promote the professional practice of Reiki to the public.

Who are the UK Reiki Federation?

  • The UK Reiki Federation was established in 1999 in response to HRH Prince Charles’s initiative, the objective being to promote the idea of a more holistic approach to Healthcare within the NHS.
  • Our members practise diverse styles of Reiki, but all Practitioners and Teachers have insurance, and have signed our Code of Ethics
  • The UKRF was one of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies, who were invited by Skills for Health, to be part of the process of developing CAM National Occupational Standards.

What is Reiki?

  • Reiki is an original system of healing which can be offered as a treatment, or can be learnt for use on oneself.
  • Reiki is a “hands on” healing system, which allows the “universal energy”, which is present in all things, to pass into the receiver’s body. The Practitioner places hands either on, or slightly above, the body of the receiver and the individual draws in as much energy as is needed.
  • Reiki promotes a mind-body balance. In doing so it relieves stress, calms the mind and helps to promote physical healing. To repeat, you too can learn to do this for yourself!

Where is Reiki used?

  • It is used in various locations, including GP surgeries, hospices, post-operative recovery care, HIV/AIDS centres and in the care of the elderly.
  • It is a complementary therapy, which has no side effects, cannot cause harm and will work alongside any other healthcare system, or on its own.
