What is Accreditation?
This is a means of ensuring that a qualification meets national requirements. Also that an awarding body is competent to award a qualification and that a candidate's achievements are recognised.
What are National Occupational Standards all about?
A set of National Occupational Standards has been developed for Complementary Healthcare practitioners, which have been agreed within the sector. The templates were circulated to UK Reiki Federation members for comment. They set out the activities that Complementary Healthcare practitioners may be involved in. They identify the performance criteria ie what individuals must be able to do and the underpinning knowledge and understanding ie what individuals must know. At the present time the templates are for therapies in general, but work will be started in 2004 on the Reiki specific standards.
Why is there a need for National Occupational Standards and for Core Curriculum and Accreditation?
This is in response to the Government Response to the House of Lords Select Committee on Science & Technology's Report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine dated March 2001. It recommends that each regulatory body in the healthcare professions should develop clear guidelines on competency and training for their members on the position they take in relation to their members' activities in well organised CAM disciplines, as well as guidelines on appropriate training courses and other relevant issues. This should include communications with relevant complementary regulatory bodies and the Prince Charles' Foundation for Integrated Health.

What is CPD?
Continuing Professional Development. This is a means by which the practitioner maintains their current level of expertise in line with best practice and develops this further to extend their skills and understanding. This is not yet compulsory for Reiki practitioners, but it is recommended.
Who will be doing the work on National Occupation Standards?
This will now come under the remit of the RRWG (Reiki Regulatory Working Group) and a sub-committee will be set up to look at Educational issues. Representatives from several Reiki organisations will be involved, including the UK Reiki Federation’s representatives.
How do I know that the course I am on is accredited?
At the present time there are no accredited courses for Reiki, and until such time as National Occupational Standards and a Core Curriculum come into being it is not possible to accredit any course. The UK Reiki Federation’s Teacher Members, however, agree to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice in order to be listed on our register. In addition they have provided documentation which indicates that they are, in fact, trained as Reiki teachers.
I am not happy with the Reiki course I have recently attended, what can I do?
If you know that the teacher is one of our members then you can make a formal complaint in writing and our Disciplinary Procedures will be implemented. If the person is not one of our members, we can, at your written request, forward details of your complaint to other Reiki organisations in order that they are aware of the concern. Many of our teachers will offer reduced rate “repeats” of courses (if required) for anyone who has not been happy with their previous training.
